Baked, our catering activity, offers two options: The Cook Club and the opportunity to work in our fully-functioning traditional Vineyard in the Valley Café.
The Cook Club provides students with the opportunity to learn and develop a range of catering skills. The objective is to help students become more independent in a home environment which will increase their self-confidence and self-belief and lead to a more independent form of living.
Each week students have the chance to prepare a meal. They learn basic cooking skills including hygiene, measurements, simple baking, salad preparation etc, with the more able progressing to more involved cooking. Cake baking is a favourite activity.
An emphasis is placed on making the sessions fun and students take delight in preparing and cooking their own lunch. Or they may take any cakes they have made home.
The Cook Club also makes jams, preserves and chutneys for sale under the Elham Valley Vineyard label in our own Vineyard in the Valley Café and other outlets.
The Cook Club sometimes works in conjunction with the Media and Core Skills section to prepare meals from other countries which students are discovering in their media sessions.
The Cook Club also acts as a pathway to working in the Café. Students achieving a level of ability will be given the opportunity to try working there.
