Job description



An exciting opportunity for a person with a love of the outdoors, a passion for horticulture and the ability to encourage and engage adults with learning difficulties in the many and varied tasks to be undertaken within our busy Horticulture Department.

The Fifth Trust is a busy day centre for adults with learning disabilities that operates commercial businesses alongside the day centre activities. In addition to a large range of skills classes and activities the centre operates a tea shop, garden centre, garden maintenance services to the local community, has a vegetable allotment growing produce for the tea shop and cookery classes, and maintains a small vineyard.


Function:                    To work within the horticulture department. To take a small group of adults with learning disabilities out into the community to work on garden maintenance jobs and across our 3 large sites. Working with and training students: tending to plants, cutting grass, weeding, undertaking general garden maintenance tasks plus delivering logs in the winter months.


Person specification:  


  • Previous commercial horticulture experience.
  • Ability to operate garden machinery eg hedge cutters, mowers.
  • Good understanding of health and safety.
  • Able to work within a diverse team.
  • Able to work with adults with learning difficulties.   
  • Good time keeping is essential.
  • A “can do” attitude to work, adaptable with working practices.
  • To follow the aims and principles of the Trust.
  • Clean driving licence.
  • Good people skills.
  • Ability to work at times un supervised.
  • Ability to motivate our students.
  • Willingness to progress in the company.

Hours of work:          40 hours per week 9am-5pm.  A full CRB will be required.


Salary:                       Stating salary @ £7.50 per hour




  • To work in small groups with our students teaching them practical horticulture skills alongside garden maintenance on and off site.
  • Ability to work under own supervision at times.
  • Working with small groups of students, manage your and the students health and safety and wellbeing.
  • Develop student horticulture skills by using your knowledge in either social care or horticulture while working together.
  • Take responsibility for the day’s work ahead by planning your sessions with line manager then go off to work un supervised.
  • Keen to learn and progress within your role.
  • Offer fun working sessions for students.
  • Participate with other staff on site when required.
  • Record keeping of the day’s activities.

 We will arrange full training at the start of the job then after qualifying 

 period the option to undertake an NVQ level 1, 2, 3 in Social Care and 

 Horticulture certificates will be available.
