Jo’s tips: orchids

02 July 2021

The Vineyard garden centre has a glorious display of orchids in the houseplant section – but does their reputation for being difficult to look after make you wary of choosing one?

Worry not, says our plant guru Jo. In fact all you need to do is follow a few simple tips and your orchid could easily live for years.

  • Orchids need plenty of light but don’t place them in direct sunlight as they can get sunburnt!
  • Water about once a week to avoid the plant drying out – rainwater is best.
  • Don’t leave your orchid standing in water as this will cause root rot.
  • When it has finished flowering, if the stem is still green it will flower again.
  • If the stem is brown it is dead – cut it back so a new stem can take its place.

If you still have questions, just ask a member of the team, they will be happy to help.
