Students grow awareness
09 December 2021
To mark UK Disability History Month, the University of Kent partnered with The Fifth Trust on a student activity based around the sunflower – the symbol of hidden disabilities.
We provided pots, compost and seeds for students at the Canterbury and Medway campuses to decorate, plant and grow their own sunflower plants at home.
This year’s Disability History Month, which runs from 18 November to 18 December, aims to raise awareness of hidden disabilities, such as autism, dementia and anxiety, which impact 80% of people with a disability in the UK.
Wearing a sunflower lanyard is becoming an increasingly popular way of letting people know you might need extra support, help or a little more time, and some of our students have adopted the scheme.
