Care and share

11 January 2024

Are you a carer wanting to meet likeminded people who share your experiences? Do you want to support and learn from others? Then you should come along to Care & Share – a relaxed monthly group founded by carers to support other carers. The meetings take place at 9am on the first Thursday of the month in the Vineyard Café - all you have to do is show up.

Jacqui Burr founded the group back in June 2022 after losing her parents and becoming the full-time carer for her brother, C J. “I soon became bewildered by all the red tape that followed C J,” said Jacqui. “I quickly began to feel very isolated and lonely and had to resign from the NHS as I could no longer fulfil my duties with the stress of no support at home.

“Then I thought, the only people that would understand are those in a very similar boat. Who do they talk to? I thought there would already be a group I could join, but there wasn’t. I realise how all our lives are wrapped around those we love and care for that maybe others just didn’t have the time.”

And from then Care and Share was formed.

“From our very first meeting I felt safe, secure and relaxed amongst like-minded friends with a decent coffee from the café thrown in the mix. We have supported each other where we can and I find the difficulties I have faced, after discussing them, become shared ideas and sometimes even a giggle.

“I still feel very privileged to be part of this group and I look forward to our once-a-month meetings.”

The group is open to all parents/guardians, relatives, and carers who support somebody with a learning disability. For the next Care & Share meeting on Thursday 1 February, a member of Carers Support will be on hand to provide information and support to people who look after a relative or friend.
