Trustees’ Week 2024: Dr David Oliver, Vice Chair
05 November 2024
In celebration of Trustees’ Week, we’re honoured to spotlight Dr David Oliver, Vice Chair of The Fifth Trust. David joined our board in 2018, bringing with him a wealth of experience in palliative and neurological care. His journey with The Fifth Trust began after attending a Christmas event here, which sparked his interest in our mission. “I was interested in the Trust and, when approached to join the board, I was very interested in seeing how I could help,” he shared.
David’s expertise has been invaluable in shaping our approach to dementia care for students. Initially, plans included a dementia-specific space, but David’s insight helped steer the board towards integrating additional support within existing classes. “I hope my knowledge has helped in developing the Trust’s response to students who may develop dementia,” he said. “We discussed providing extra support for students within existing classes and groups, which helps them stay involved in the community.”
For David, the most rewarding part of his role is seeing the impact on the students themselves.
“Hearing about and seeing students’ experiences, and watching their growth and support, is incredibly fulfilling,” David said.
He also takes pride in chairing The Fifth Trust Forum, which has been instrumental in supporting family carers through the Care and Share programme.
Reflecting on his time with The Fifth Trust, David describes his role as “a privilege.” He adds, “It’s been wonderful to see the Trust develop, and I look forward to future growth.”
We are looking for Trustees who are passionate about our vision to provide a safe and fulfilling way of life for our students, helping each individual to achieve their full potential.
