Women in woodwork!

08 March 2025

At The Fifth Trust, we believe everyone should have the chance to explore their skills, creativity, and passions. This International Women’s Day, we’re shining a light on the incredible women in our Woodwork sessions – students who are crafting, building, and proving that woodwork isn’t just for men.

Woodwork is a rewarding activity that allows our students to learn new skills, create practical items, and build their confidence. Two of our talented students, Luisa and Katy, shared their experiences with us.

For Luisa, woodwork brings a sense of peace and happiness. "Sanding is my favourite," she says. "I like to produce things. It makes me feel peaceful, happy, and it's enjoyable." Katy agrees, saying she enjoys "making all the different things and putting them together."

Both students are particularly proud of their work on bird boxes and bird tables. "I like making the bird boxes, putting them together and seeing the end production," Luisa explains. Katy adds, "I feel proud when I see them completed."

Learning new techniques has been exciting. Luisa enjoys sanding and varnishing bowls, while Katy has picked up new skills like making bird tables. When challenges arise, both students know they can count on their instructors for support. "If I’m stuck on something, my instructor helps me out," says Luisa. Katy recalls how instructor Les encouraged her when she was unsure about sanding: "He said, ‘Yes, you will be able to do it, but it will take a lot of sanding.’ That kind of support really helps."

When it comes to being women in a traditionally male-dominated craft, Luisa laughs and jokes: "It makes me feel I can override the men!" Katy simply enjoys feeling equal in the sessions.

Luisa gave some great advice to women thinking about doing Woodwork: "Give it a go! And if you like it, then come and join us."

Our Woodwork sessions are open to all, and it’s inspiring to see our female students take on the craft with enthusiasm and skill.

If you’d like to support us and are looking for a unique, handcrafted item for your home or garden, just ask - we’ll do our best to deliver. Guided by an expert woodwork instructor, students take part in every stage of production, from cutting and sanding to staining and delivering the finished product. The Wood Shack workshop is located at Barham Business Park, opposite the Vineyard. Drop in on weekdays, call 01227 831052, or email [email protected].
