Apprenticeship success

28 March 2025

At The Fifth Trust, we are committed to providing opportunities for individuals to grow, learn, and make a real difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities. One of our dedicated team members, Harley Rolfe, recently completed her apprenticeship as an Assistant Carer. Harley joined us purely for the apprenticeship, gaining hands-on experience and valuable skills along the way. We caught up with her to hear about her journey, the skills she’s developed, and what her next steps are.

What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship at The Fifth Trust, and how did you find the experience? I studied Health and Social Care at school and took an interest in it. My family has worked in care my whole life, and that inspired me by showing how much of a positive effect I could have on an individual’s life. I found my apprenticeship so rewarding because, over the time I have been here, I have formed bonds with the students. Each day, I have many laughs while supporting them at the same time, which makes the experience so enjoyable.

Can you tell us about some of the key skills and knowledge you’ve gained during your apprenticeship? I have learned so many skills and gained so much knowledge while being here. Every day is different, and the diversity of students means I am always adapting. Some key skills I have developed include communication, mediation, working in a person-centred way, and being part of a team.

What has been your most rewarding moment while working with the students at The Fifth Trust? My most rewarding moment in this role has been gaining the trust of the students and watching the process of them building that trust over time.

Do you think this apprenticeship has prepared you for your future career? What are your next steps? This apprenticeship has opened up so many different opportunities for me through the knowledge and experience I have gained. My next step is working for one of the homes connected to The Fifth Trust. This will expand my experience and knowledge in a different setting.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the care or charity sector? My advice to anyone interested in an apprenticeship in the care sector is to go into it with an open mind and be yourself. Be willing to try everything - you will learn so much.

Harley completed her apprenticeship as an Assistant Carer in 17 months, making a meaningful impact on the lives of those she supported.
